365 Create: Day 31

Camera Cabinet –

I made this for my wife to store our cameras in.

We have it hanging up in the living room next to my gas mask girl cabinet.

She loves it. Its nice to have a safe place to store them – especially her dSLR (that’s taking this picture)! And its easy to get to so she can grab it any time to use.

The antique Brownie-esque cameras were my inspiration. So I painted & stained this one to look aged.

365 Create: Day 27

Day 27 –

The fireplace makeover I did at our house. When we moved in it was a brick with wood mantle that was at a strange height. It had a real grandma feel to it.

I ended up pulling the mantle and top four levels of brick. Then covered it all in tile. I think it is much more our style. A little bit of a Tim Burton feel. Much better than a grandma feel.

365 Create: Day 25

Day 25 –

A wedding box I made for my wife and me. The idea of the project was simple – pull, slide, and open.

Each of the boxes does one of those functions. The whole set of small boxes measures 17″wide x 11″tall x 5 3/4″deep.

It was made from one large piece of walnut, all cut down/milled on my table saw and sanding wheel. The board was roughly 3 1/2″ thick. The pieces for the box case are 5/16″ thick after cutting and sanding.

I’d get about five pieces out of each piece of rough stock. Then simply cut, glue, clamp, drill, make dowel rods, install dowel rods, engrave, join boxes, stain, finish, and hang.

*Side note, all traditional joinery. No nails or screws.

365 Create: Day 1

Starting out a post-a-day project for 2013. My wife and I are both going to participate. I’m always looking for a reason to create.

This is a maple cabinet that I made for my living room. I drew the girl with the gas mask on the front and the planes on the inside. I made the copper handles for the drawers. The drawers I made are actually individual boxes that pull out and have lids. The dovetails are all hand cut and chiseled. It was a great project to hone in on my dovetailing. All in all, its about 16 inches tall and 9 3/4 inches across.
